Who We Are

CHIMP (CHildren’s IMProvisation) is led by Dave Brandl and Melissa Wheeler, two Denver natives who have produced, directed, and written for children’s theater together since 2003. Children’s improvisation provides opportunities to develop entertaining and practical skills they’ll use all their lives, for presenting in classes, speaking publicly or in meetings, or completing successful job or higher education interviews.

About Your Classes:
– Challenge children’s creative talents
– Increase confidence in public speaking
– Boost the ability to think on your feet
– Expand presentation and performance skills
Concludes with a public performance, where the students are the only performers on stage for the full-length improvisation show.

Your weekly classes include professional instruction in:
– Essential theater techniques
– Structural rules of improvisation
– Long-form improvisation to develop characters and story lines
– Short-form improvisation to emphasize humor
– Using improvisation to write scripts
– Incorporating song and dance into improvised scenes
– Working on a professional stage

CHIMP’s 2015 Season brings improvisation and performance opportunities to children ages 10 to 16. Improvisation, that is, when performers take suggestions from the audience and craft them into short skits and scenes, develops entertaining and practical skills they’ll use all their lives, from giving class presentations, to public speaking, to leading meetings, to completing successful job and higher education interviews.

Your four-week program begins August 1st at 9:00 am, with basic theater practices: movement, posture, and vocals. It moves into ensemble building and introduces the rules of improvisation. Each week builds from the previous one, culminating in a public performance, where the participants are the only ones onstage, fully in charge of the show.

Registration for the workshop is $100.
